Bank Account Set Up

To open a Thai Bank Account

Our office is located in the banking center of the city with all the banks nearby. We can liaise with the banking staff and arrange to open a banking or saving account or what you require.
As part of our service, we can assist you with language translation services to help you understand the process and banking institution, including ATM. Language is the main barrier in opening an account and understanding specific account requirements.
If you’re planning on living here in Thailand for an extended period, you must open an account. Because in Thailand, there are many hidden banking fees for getting access to your money.
Many banks require a Certificate of Residency as proof of identification. But a work permit also is an accepted form of identification for opening a bank account.

Policies, Rules, and Eligibility

The process, rules, and policies of Thai banks are different for foreigners than residents. Usually, the policies and regulations depend on bank employees. Also, the same bank may issue a different policy for their adjacent branch. So, you may get rejected by a bank but may get accepted by another due to a different system.
The procedure for opening a bank account also varies for foreigners. All Thai banks require you to visit the office in person. The timeframe for process completion also varies. You can get your account open on the same day of application. But some banks take a certain time to verify your documents.
The bank will tell you their eligibility criteria and the documents you will need on the day of application submission. We are in constant contact with the banks to advise you with confidence according to the current bank requirements.
The documents include:
⦁ Your passport with copies of relevant pages
⦁ Your Thai driving license (as ID) is sometimes required
⦁ Your Thai house registration (if you have ownership of the house) or a letter from your landlord (if you’re living on rent)
⦁ If you’re working in Thailand, then your work permit
⦁ If you’re a student, then your student visa
⦁ A Certificate of Residency issued by the Immigration Department.
You must bring your passport, driver’s license, or any other form of the document having your picture for identification purposes. For example, your student visa or work permit can serve the purpose. The bank will provide you with a detailed explanation of what documents you’ll be needing.
In addition to these documents, you must bring additional documents because the branch you’re applying to may request more papers, such as bank statements of another bank or utility bills from different companies.

Which Bank Should You Choose?

Here at the Chiang Mai Visa Shop, we can assist you in selecting a bank, but strictly speaking, it will be your choice of Bank Selection.

Not all banks provide the same services. Some banks are known as being friendlier to Foreigners than the others. Here, we’ll recommend you two banks.

Bangkok Bank

It is Thailand’s largest bank, and it has many branches across the kingdom. It holds a good reputation of being more welcoming and friendly to foreigners than all other banks.
It also has branches in New York and London, which makes the international money exchange easier. This bank is easily linked to your PayPal account and links your account to a western branch for transferring and receiving money from abroad to your Thai account within days.
Also, Transfer Wise (WISE) is their international agent for the Bangkok Bank, which is best known for transferring international funds directly into your account for minimal fees.

Kasikorn Bank

The second bank on the list is Kasikorn Bank. They issue various types of accounts for foreigners. But cashing foreign currency checks in Thailand requires great efforts. Their service varies from branch to branch; hence you have to look around to meet your needs.

When you are opening an account, carefully select a banking institution as there are so many to choose from.

Feel free to contact us at the Chiang Mai Visa Shop for further guidance regarding opening your bank account.
