Student Ed Visa for Thailand (Non-immigration ED Visa)

What should you know before getting a student visa for Thailand?

The Immigration Department here in Thailand, which controls visa processes, can make sudden changes to their policy without notice. So, it is best to ask your chosen university or school to provide up-to-date requirements for visa application.

What do we recommend?

Prepare all the required documentation before submitting and ensure everything is correct as per the Immigration requirements.
When preparing your application, it’s important to remember that you are responsible for the visa, not the university/school you’re applying for.
Apply for the visa in your home country or before arriving in Thailand. That’ll make the process easier, faster, and less costly.

Find the program of choice:

Every university or school has different application procedures, and your selected institution will outline what it requires. Some schools only require an email including your application form and copies of your transcripts, while others may demand completed documentation with certified copies and proper photographs.
Also, the submission fee is important for a complete application. No application is considered legal unless you submit your fee. As with application submission, every school differs in their fee also.
Paying from a foreign bank can be troublesome and might cause considerable costs. Some universities allow you to pay on the day of registration, which, in some cases, is a better option.

Letter of Admission

As soon as your application gets accepted, you should expect to receive the acceptance letter, AKA, ‘Letter of Admission.’
This Letter of Admission is usually printed on the respective official letterhead of your school or university and would be signed off by a managing official of the institute.
This letter confirms that you have been accepted for the selected program and that you should show up to commence your studies from the allocated date.
In this letter, they will most likely mention the subjects you will be studying in the following semester. Note that both details are equally important.
Make sure that your chosen school is certified and authorized by authorities.
A regular student visa is for one year, and it shall only be granted to serious students who want to attain a degree. If the authorities feel like you have misused your visa to carry other activities like holidaying and finding a job, the visa extension may be reduced accordingly. Also, if, for some reason, your study period gets reduced, the authorities hold the right to reduce your visa too. The immigration office can check your attendance record at any time to ensure you are a legitimate student.
This is why it is essential to make your application look like a serious candidate applying for a student visa. Usually, in Thailand, a semester is five months long, and the educators will maintain the syllabus over this period.

Apply for your Visa:

You’ll need:
⦁ Letter of Admission
⦁ Photocopy of your valid passport. The passport must not expire for the next 6 months.
⦁ Recent passport-size photographs to apply at a Royal Thai Embassy or Consulate present in your country.
Some countries have a time frame limitation while applying, so you may need to calculate the processing time for the Letter of Admission. Some countries need to get a 60-day visa to enter Thailand, and citizens of other countries can also enter without a visa. Again, check with your local embassy or consulate.
So if you have arrived in Thailand without first attaining the non-immigrant ED visa, be aware, you MAY have to leave Thailand to be eligible to apply for the visa again, which will be highly costly and time-consuming.
However, if you are present in Thailand and have a tourist visa of 60-days, you may be able to change your visa without leaving Thailand. Although this process is only acceptable if done within the first 30 days of your visa, as the authorities will need the other 30 days to process your request.
Whichever way you decide to go for, your tourist visa should have at least 21 days remaining at the time of your request. If this is not the case, you will have to leave Thailand to apply for a visa from abroad.
You may consider flying to Singapore, Malaysia, Cambodia, and Laos for your convenience.
The photocopies you submit along with this need to have your signatures. Remember to sign with blue ink to clarify that your sign is original and has not been photocopied.
The authorities usually require you to supply 4 photographs; you may need to check with them to make sure you submit the right size to avoid any hassle.

Your first one-year visa is valid for 90 days: (it’s normal)

Thailand’s Kingdom is very lenient when it comes to offering a whole year’s visa to students. This is because you need to have adequate papers showing that you will attend at least one full semester in their school or university.
Note that this application itself is not enough to make you eligible as a student. That is why the student visa you get through this acceptance letter is only 90-days long.
Under the period of these 90-days, you are required to pay the entire semester’s fees and attain a confirmation letter about your registration. Once this is done, you can now apply for an extension of the full-time study period.
While this process is ongoing, you are not required to leave Thailand to confirm and secure your visa.
The process is straightforward. Even the extension for the next year is simply going to require the documents mentioned previously.

90 Days Notification Report

The rule is, no matter how long you plan to stay in Thailand, you need to report to the authorities of the Thailand Immigration Bureau after every 90- days and inform them of your address. This calls for simply filling in a form that requires no fees. You will get a slip that will have the date you need to fill the form again attached to your passport. This is the TM 47 Form, which you can print from our download page.
You can make this application 14 days earlier than required or make it as late as 7 days. On the 8th day, you will be fined 2,000 Baht for late reporting.
