Globally, a lot of people are doing voluntary work to help people. But in Thailand, a work permit is essential to do voluntary work. Although many people tell you that a work permit is not a big issue, we strongly advise you to obtain a volunteer NonImmigrant O Visa (Volunteer Work Permit). All kinds of volunteer work require a work permit.

You still need a correct visa to support your cause, and you’re required to provide all the relevant documents with your application.

You may think doing volunteer work is ok as you’re not getting paid, but that’s not the case. You may get arrested if you get caught for doing volunteer work without a work permit. The Immigration office maintains strict policing regarding work permits, so do get a permit before doing any kind of work in Thailand.

To work as a Volunteer, you require a Non-Immigrant O Visa (Voluntary Work Visa). Here are some examples we can advise for people wanting to Volunteer.

Many people who wish to work voluntarily in Thailand, like helping at an elephant camp or Teaching English at a local school, should be aware that this is illegal, and working without a work permit breaches Thai law.

This is not permitted under any circumstances. People that don’t understand Thai law will advise you that you should not worry about the permit, and it will not be a problem just to help as a volunteer as you don’t get paid. We advise entirely differently and inform you that if you want to help, you must obtain a Volunteer Work Permit.

You still require the correct visa, and you will need to supply the relevant paperwork at the time of the application.

Many people think working as a volunteer is allowed because you are not receiving payment. PLEASE UNDERSTAND that if you are found working for free without a permit, you stand the chance of being arrested by the police. So a work permit as a volunteer is required. Its not worth the risk to work without the correct permits in Thailand.
