Motor Vehicle Registration Renewal in Thailand
General Information:

Each motor vehicle in Thailand must maintain a valid vehicle registration as per Thai law. Renewing your vehicle’s registration (the tax sticker) is relatively simple, considering if your car or motorbike is less than five years old.

It can be done quickly at every office of the Department of Land Transport (https://www.dlt.go.th/en/).

Documents Required:
  1. Your vehicle book(green or blue)
  2. Proof of payment for next year’s PRB (Compulsory Motor Insurance)
Registration fees:

The registration fee will vary according to the type and age of the vehicle you are registering. You will pay around 350 to 450 baht for a new tax sticker for your motorbike and between 1,200 to 8,000 baht for your car. For example, the cost of renewing a Honda City 1.8’s registration is roughly 2,000 baht. For the first five years, the fees will remain about the same, after which they will be reduced by about  10% every year up to a maximum reduction of 50%. This is an approximate costing.

Vehicle Inspection:

All vehicles older than five years are required to undergo a roadworthy technical check-up from a certified service center before the application for registration renewal can be processed.

This will cost you around 200 baht and should only take about 30 minutes. All certified service centers will have a blue and yellow gear-shaped logo on the sign, like the one in the photograph below.

You should always check your vehicle before the inspection to ensure you will not face delay at the inspection station. If your vehicle has any fault, it will not get issued with a roadworthy certificate until it’s fixed.

The inspection will include a car number verification and an inspection of the lights, brakes, and exhaust. Afterward, the center will issue a roadworthy certificate for you to present with your application along with the other two requirements.

  • Luckily, all you need is (1) your vehicle book or a photocopy if you are paying a credit, (2) proof of payment for next year’s PRB, and if your vehicle is older than five years,(3) a roadworthy certificate from a certified inspection center.
